At 12:39 pm Friday, QFD and mutual aid units were dispatched to 39 White Rock Road in Colerain Township for a barn fire. On response, LCWC911 advised of several calls reporting a working fire. As units traveled down Rt. 472, a large column of smoke was seen in the area, and Engine 574 called for the “Working Fire Dispatch”.
Units arrived with a large dairy barn fully involved with the siding on the nearby house melting. Engine 574’s crew placed multiple lines in service, the first to protect the house and the second to protect the milk house and diesel room (all of which were saved). Tanker 57 set up the nurse tanker operation deploying 2 clapper valves. Truck 57, once the fire was darkened down, was able to position in the driveway between the barn and house for master stream use. Engine 574 had 400′ of supply line laid and 1100′ of attack line deployed.
The fire went to a second alarm for water supply in this very rural area. Additional units and manpower were used for fill sites or various fire ground tasks. Deputy 57 had command until the arrival of the QFD Duty Officer, Chief 572, who assumed command and Deputy 57 took operations. Officers from BTFC 51 and RFFC 89 had the water supply.
Thanks to all of the mutual aid companies that assisted on the scene. Thanks also to R. Work Excavating for the track hoe for overhaul. Crews were on scene for just over 4 hours. On returning, the stand by companies, Willow Street and Kinzer had most of the hose washed and hung up to dry. A huge thanks to them and the other QFD members that helped at the station after work.
